Black ice occurs when moisture freezes on a very cold surface. Exposed roads and bridges can have black ice when other sections of the same road may be clear. Black ice is virtually invisible, and so presents a particular hazard for motorcyclists and drivers. In wintry conditions, if you notice a reduction in tyre noise or if the steering becomes lighter, you should suspect that there may be black ice on the road.
